CLP, Labelling and Safety Data Sheets

Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Products

The CLP Regulation (“classification, labeling and packaging”) is an EU regulation from 2009 and is based on the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
The CLP Regulation ensures that workers and consumers in the European Union are clearly informed about the hazards associated with chemicals by their classification and labeling.
Before marketing a substance or mixture, companies must determine their potential risk to human health and the environment, and classify them according to the identified hazards. Hazardous chemicals must also be labeled according to a standardized system, so that workers and consumers know their effects before use.
Thanks to this process, the hazards of chemicals will be communicated through standard identification information and pictograms on labels and safety data sheets.

Safety Data Sheets

Safety data sheets are the main instrument to ensure that manufacturers and importers communicate the necessary information along the supply chain and to allow safe use of their substances and mixtures.
Safety data sheets contain information about the properties of the substance and its hazards as well as instructions for the handling, disposal, transport, first-aid measures, measures for fire fighting and to limit and monitor exposure.

Messer applies a tool validated by the European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) for classification and labeling of substances and mixtures and the compilation of safety data sheets. By using this tool, Messer ensures that the content and scope of the safety data sheets always meet the requirements of the relevant regulations.
